Sushant Puri is an IBTA Editor and lives in Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States.
He writes: “I was born in New Delhi, India and grew up playing table tennis for my high school team, and reading Tolstoy. Around the time in high school when my close friends and I formed a rock band (we never played even a single gig unfortunately), I became deeply interested in science. Back then, I had an option to choose between going to medical school and engineering school but because I like evolutionary biology more than quantum mechanics, I chose the former. When I found myself in medical school in Delhi University, I realized basic science was what kept me up at night.
As I progressed in my education, I figured moving to the United States was a good idea and with much trepidation, applied for a neurology residency. The complexity of the brain and its integration with the rest of the organ systems was utterly fascinating. However, patients suffering with brain cancer held a special place in my heart. For whatever reasons they may be, I was able to relate to their struggles and had a change of heart at the last minute to pursue a neuro-oncology fellowship. Guided by phenomenal mentors, Dr. Nicholas and Dr. Maraka, I started my fellowship in 2021 at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institution/National Institutes of Health and here I plan to delve into basic immunology research in patients with brain cancer. With my education and training, I aspire to be a physician-scientist, and hope to make a difference.”
