“Brilliance! 2022” – a virtual exhibition of creative works from the international brain tumour community is now online

We are delighted to announce that the second “Brilliance!“ international virtual art exhibition is now online to mark International Brain Tumour Awareness Week 2022

Following the success of the 2021 Brilliance Exhibition, the International Brain Tumour Alliance is pleased to again showcase the creativity and talent of the international brain tumour community. In “Brilliance! 2022” you will see the work and read the words of patients, their family members and friends, health care professionals and scientists. All have found a way to distill or expand upon their experience within the world of brain tumours or to find a new perspective on life through the challenges they have faced.

“Brilliance! 2022” features the work of 34 artists from nine countries; some have never shown their work in a public exhibition before. These works express uniquely personal responses to a situation that is common to all the artists but experienced differently.

The creative impulse in each artist opens a window to diverse feelings and experiences. By sharing these artistic representations, a common bond is formed and all who contribute cease to be alone.

We hope that you find resonance and inspiration in the words and images of the “Brilliance! 2022” exhibition. The full catalogue can be viewed online here or downloaded from our website here.

Join us in a celebration of creativity!

Many people are affected by a brain tumour and in a variety of ways, from patients, to caregivers to healthcare professionals and researchers. Therefore, to shine a light on the uniqueness of each individual, the IBTA is hosting:

“Brilliance! 2022 – A Virtual Exhibition of Creative Works
from the Global Brain Tumour Community”

About “Brilliance”

The IBTA is delighted to announce the return of “Brilliance”, our annual virtual art exhibition, for 2022! This virtual event will be launched for viewing on the IBTA website (www.theibta.org) in conjunction with International Brain Tumour Awareness Week, running from Saturday, October 29 to Saturday, November 5, 2022.  The exhibition will remain available for viewing online indefinitely.

Patients, family members, friends, researchers and healthcare professionals of every discipline are invited to submit their work to the IBTA’s “Brilliance! 2022” exhibition by completing the downloadable form linked to below and returning it to the IBTA at: ibtabrilliance@gmail.com with your creative work.

The deadline for submissions is 30th September, 2022 at 12:00 midnight, UK time. A submitted work can be any piece of artistic creativity: for example, a painting, sculpture, drawing, piece of jewellery, craftwork, ceramics, photograph, etc.

A photo of the creative work must be included with this submission application. The photo itself, of the creative work, will be the “submitted work”. Please do not send us the actual creative work.

Any individual may submit up to three creative works. A separate submission application is required for each creative work. Please refer to the attached Guidelines and Exhibition Rules for additional information about the format of submission photos and other details. Participants in “Brilliance! 2021” are encouraged to submit new works, not previously shown in the virtual exhibition in 2021.  Works exhibited in other shows, are welcome provided proper permission is confirmed by the show organisers.

About the International Brain Tumour Alliance (IBTA)

The International Brain Tumour Alliance (IBTA) is a unique global network founded in 2005 as a dynamic worldwide community for brain tumour patient organisations and others involved in the field of neuro-oncology. Our mission is to advocate for the best treatments, information, support and quality of life for brain tumour patients, offering them, their families and caregivers hope – wherever they live in the world. We work alongside members of our community – including patients, families, researchers, scientists, clinicians, nurses, allied healthcare professionals, policymakers, key opinion leaders and others – to engage in advocacy efforts, to raise awareness of the challenges of brain tumours and to share information and support. Celebrating GBM Awareness Day 2022

GBM Awareness Day is on Wednesday, 20th July 2022 and is a commemorative day when we particularly focus on the challenges and realities of a glioblastoma diagnosis.

Glioblastoma, also known as “GBM”, can occur in people of any age although it is more often diagnosed in adults.  GBM is a fast-growing and highly aggressive brain tumour which, in adults, occurs most often in the cerebral hemispheres of the brain, particularly in the frontal and temporal lobes.  Glioblastomas are diffuse tumours which means that their root-like growth extends into other parts of the brain making it very difficult to remove the entire tumour surgically. GBM is the most common malignant brain and CNS tumour, at 47.7% of all cases.  Glioblastomas are extremely difficult to treat and a cure continues to elude researchers.

GBM Awareness Day was initiated in the United States and organisations there, as well as others in different countries, will be scheduling special awareness-raising events on 20th July to highlight the challenges of this devastating disease.  Please search online for “GBM Awareness Day 2022” to see what’s planned and for ideas on how you can spread the word about the challenges of this particularly incalcitrant and difficult-to-treat cancer.  Please also use your social media platforms to spread the word and ensure that as many people as possible are aware of this important day.

GLiMR VIDEO – Reuse of medical data: how patients can contribute in research

Patient data is crucial to discover more about illnesses and develop new treatments. Patient medical data can be used for such purposes but it’s important that patient privacy is always protected.  However, by sharing medical data, patients can make a difference to important research.

A new animated video on this topic has been produced as part of the COST Action CA18206 Glioma MR Imaging 2.0 European project known as GLiMR. GLiMR is supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). The video explains to patients in plain language how sharing their medical data and at the same time having privacy protection (in line with the GDPR – General Data Protection Regulation) is possible, and why patient data is so very important.

The video has been developed by Well Played, GLiMR Work Group 5, legal advisor Nils Broecks, Katya Van Driessche (DPO UZ Gent) and the International Brain Tumour Alliance (IBTA). The animated video project manager is Patricia Clement.

“Brilliance!” – the IBTA’s first virtual art exhibition launches to mark International Brain Tumour Awareness Week 2021

The IBTA is thrilled to announce the launch of its first virtual art exhibition of creative works from the global brain tumour community.

Brain tumour patients, family members and healthcare professionals from around the world were invited to submit up to three created pieces to “Brilliance!” together with a short explanatory text describing their artworks and how they, themselves, have been affected by a brain tumour.

In response to our invitation, we received a large number of incredible creations which shine a light on the uniqueness of our international brain tumour community and reflect a broad range of artistic media, cultures and geographic regions.

The “Brilliance!” exhibition catalogue is now available to view online and will remain available for viewing indefinitely as a tribute to the determination and resilience of our international brain tumour community and as a symbol of hope and inspiration for all.
